NORTH CAROLINA, U.S.A. - THE REGION

Sweet Home Carolina!

North Carolina, is located on the Eastern seaboard of North America, in the United States of America below Virginia and above South Carolina. Our state has large cities like Charlotte but also has many rural towns scattered from the mountains to the coast. With four distinct seasons throughout the year, our hot months generally range from June through August with mild falls/autumns and springs. We're also slowly having warmer winters, year by year with very little snowfall.

Carolinians enjoy such a variety of landscapes, each within just a few hours from a central location, such as the capital city of Raleigh. From farming to technology, and arts to large venues for entertainment, we have it all. Our Carolina Hurricanes recently brought home the Stanley Cup in hockey, and our Panthers are always a favorite in the Carolinas during football season. If you are planning on touring more of North Carolina, you will find plenty of attractions on the coast, as well as inland. North Carolina has quickly become a MAJOR destination for relocation, with development occurring EVERYWHERE the eye can see! Travelers coming from a Westerly direction will find Interstate Highway 40 quite boring, but keep an eye out for those Topsail Island exits about 30 miles or so before Wilmington, save time and cut the corner North-East.

TOPSAIL BEACH, TOPSAIL ISLAND - THE AREA

Island Life
[photo]

Topsail Island is a 24 mile island East of Hampstead, North Carolina, stretching from Figure Eight Island North to Jacksonville and Emerald Isle. It is told that pirates would hide their ships behind the island when being hunted, thus, the name "Top Sail Island". Later, the U.S. Government installed underground missle tubes and watch towers the length of the island. Topsail Island was used for space rocket testing, and was eventually beaten out by Cape Canaveral in Florida due to less variation in weather conditions. Visit the Arsenal Center building just two blocks away from the house, on the sound, for a delightful museum displaying some of the island's heritage, missles and all!

Since the 1960's, Topsail has slowly developed over time. We have very few stop lights on the island and speed limits are slow. We received our first fast food chain up in Surf City just a few years ago. Since then, a number of large beach shop chains and other businesses have added their gaudy spectacle to the area around the Surf City Bridge but Topsail Beach has been left unblemished.

With inlets, the Inter-coastal Waterway, the Atlantic Ocean and the sound, aquatic recreation and fishing are easily at-hand. Visitors coming in from the West will drive over to the island on a large draw bridge, where boats and ships make their way up the Inter-coastal Waterway. Fishing is a short walk away from the house for either the ocean or the sound. Wells Cargo is half a block from the Jolly Roger Pier, providing for a very short walk with rods and tackle in-hand or in-tow. The sound is two blocks to the West, with a sound pier located at the southern end of the island. Boat, jet ski and wave-runner owners should feel secure knowing there are plenty of commercial boat ramps, docks, marinas, and repair shops on and off the island. Here, we see some fishing from the very Southern backside tip of the island at the inlet where it meets the sound. In off-months, a permit has been available allowing vehicles onto the beach for easy access to the Southern-most tip. In the summer months, our beaches are sparsely covered with sun and sea worshippers and motorized travel is forbidden and enforced.

If golfing is your game call in for a tee time and step on to one of six area golf courses on the mainland, just off the island around Hampstead as well as the North Shore/Sneads Ferry area across from the northern tip of the island. Topsail Greens is a fair place for a round, is open to the public and offers rentals.

Our local area from the house provides many outlets, from restaurants to Putt-Putt golf. Our family has a tradition of getting in at least one round of putt-putt, right up the street, when we get together. Feel comfortable knowing that the town hall, Topsail Beach police station and E.M.S. station are located one block away from the house. We also have a Post Office across the street as well as a roller skating rink that is good wholesome fun for all ages, a must on your first visit, even if just to sit and watch (though you can see in through their windows from the back deck). See our list of local businesses within walking distance or a short drive.

Common ways to bide your time during a Topsail Beach vacation, may take you shopping at The Gift Basket, or grabbing a quick lunch at the popular, corner Beach Shop or Skully's Bar & Grill. Enjoy a southern seafood meal while overlooking the sound during sun-set at The Breezeway Restaurant or widdle away the hours with a few glasses of wine at a new place, just look for the bright lime green building. Our island offers fare from fast food to five star quisine to suit most tastes. If you plan on doing your own cooking at the house, Godwin's Grocery & Gas is at the end of our block, so it won't take but a few minutes for you to literally, run down for that last minute item before anyone can miss you! Surf City offers other specialty and beach shops, larger grocery stores, and services such as beach rentals. Children might be interested in taking a quick run down the large water slides that makes a fun afternoon for the whole family.

October brings Autumn-Fest to Topsail beach where beach music, good times, and good food come together. They have had multiple bands playing across the street that can be enjoyed without leaving the comfort of our back deck. Location, location, location. Although Wells Cargo is not directly on the beach, our proximity to the beach and entertainment and simply, the ability to walk whereever you need to go, is quickly appreciated once you arrive.

Wells Cargo, our house for rent, was built in 1975. Our family lived in the small one-story cinder block structure next door before the new house was built. That early, small duplex house was the 9th structure built on Topsail Island in the 60's, the original "Wells Cargo".

Recent renovations, have the new Wells Cargo in the best condition it has ever been. Beige shingled vinyl siding accents the three story house, while off-white trim highlights windows, doors, decks and outer stairways. Our kitchen area and all inner walls, ceilings and floors were replaced in 2001.

Accommodations include four bedrooms containing three queens, one twin and a single bed. The original architect in 1975 designed the 2nd and 3rd floors of the house to form as a natural cooling channel, capturing the breeze coming off the ocean. This eliminates the need for air conditioning on warm days, though heating and cooling are included on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Two full bathrooms on the 2nd floor provide for the entire house. Sliding glass doors and porches reside on the east and west 2nd floor entrances, with a third on the ocean-side 3rd floor.

Built for interaction and convenience, this house is one street over from the beach with easy beach access in 3 locations via the Jolly Roger Hotel. Just walk through the parking lot, then up one flight of stairs to get over the dunes to conserve their shape.

Visit our FLASH or QUICKTIME versions of the site to view video and photos of the house and a spoken outline of each room's features. Great view from the 3rd floor deck!

Before vacating the premises, the renter must make sure these items below are completed. We also offer a routine (not extraordinary) clean up service for a $250.00 fee if you prefer.

For varying means of travel we provide a convenient information packet that will be mailed to you upon successful reservation, registration and payment. If you would like to view our location now, choose one of the following links for maps and directions to 714 Ocean Blvd., Topsail Beach, NC

Just remember, to be patient when driving. If you get stopped by the draw bridge before Surf City your vacation has begun! Also remember not to speed on the island. Surf City and Topsail Beach cops have nothing better to do since our area is sooooo quiet. There is primarily one main road/highway that runs the length of the island so all they have to do is camp out in one spot. The speed limit around our house is a low 25 miles per hour due to the amount of businesses and pedestrian traffic.
